Rapid City Area Schools is committed to ensuring every student has access to a safe, stable, and supportive learning environment—no matter their current living situation.
If your family is temporarily staying in any of the following situations, your child may qualify for additional support through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act:
Living with friends or relatives due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason
Staying in a hotel or motel
Staying in an emergency or transitional shelter
Staying in a car, campground, park, abandoned building, or another space that is not meant for housing
The McKinney-Vento Act provides important rights and services to help students continue their education without interruption. Eligible students may receive:
School stability: the option to stay in their current school, even if they move, with free transportation if it is in their best educational interest
Immediate enrollment: even without typically required documents
Free school meals
Connections to early childhood programs for younger children
College and career readiness support for high school students
Referrals to community resources for additional needs
